TREE TIME

One of the local hardware stores is already selling Christmas trees. I approve.

I love that this tree has two tops. The more the merrier.

SPRING STREET

I definitely missed having a real winter this year, but at least we are having a beautiful, blooming spring.

IT'S A COLD AND IT'S A BROKEN

I don't think there is anyone who does not love this song. Originally written and released by Leonard Cohen in 1984, it has been performed and recorded by hundreds of artists in various languages. The full version of the song has 15 verses, but Cohen is said to have written 80 verses originally and it took him two years to complete. Cohen has said of the song's meaning: "It explains that many kinds of hallelujahs do exist, and all the perfect and broken hallelujahs have equal value."

"Hallelujah" is a Hebrew word, meaning "praise Yah." The song is broadcast at 2am every Saturday night by the Israeli defence force's radio channel.

MOTHER ART

Matthias Heiderich captures the beauty in the mundane and the reserve in the sublime. Pure visual poetry.

“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization”.

MADE IN AMERICA

When I was in fifth grade, our student teacher used pancakes as a fun way to test our knowledge of landforms and American geography. There was a hot plate involved and he did his best to create a pancake version of the lower 48. He asked us where the "mountains" and maple syrup "rivers" should be and then added powdered sugar "snow" to top it off. Butter might have also played a role. If only we had these amazing hand made skillets!

Exclusively from the den of FeLion Studios, comes the 48 cast iron skillets of the “Made In America” original state-pan art piece. Every skillet from the “Made In America” series fits together with the surrounding states, making these items fun to collect and build your own geographic regions of functional skillets !

Each skillet comes with a custom made magnetic hanger that displays the pans neatly on the wall. This allows you to easily install the piece as wall art, use it, and re-hang your skillet simply by plunking it back onto the magnet for a clean and easy exhibition.

FLAUNT IT

Until that magical day comes when all electronics are wireless, we are forced to deal with extension cords. Instead of being ashamed of these necessary evils, why not turn them into Art?

HEART BEET

SWEET MURMURATIONS

You never know what you will see when you go on an adventure. On a canoe outing, Sophie Windsor Clive and Liberty Smith happened upon "one of nature's greatest and most fleeting phenomena" that I never even knew existed - a flock of starlings, known as a murmuration. It appears to be a magnificently choreographed dance, but it is completely spontaneous.

"The math equations that best describe starling movement are borrowed 'from the literature of "criticality," of crystal formation and avalanches -- systems poised on the brink, capable of near-instantaneous transformation.' They call it 'scale-free correlation,' and it means that no matter how big the flock, 'If any one bird turned and changed speed, so would all the others.' "

51 LOVE STORIES

"A heart made of 51 books on love. From the love of Botany to paperbacks with covers of cheesy illustrated chest baring Fabio looking men on top of a mountain with their lover grasping their leg in a torn gown. Those were the books your one Aunt in the family would read one after another."

HESTRA

You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. I loved my Hestra gloves, but never fully appreciated them until I lost one. I have held on to its mate, hoping that they will magically be reunited. But I think it's time to bite the bullet and invest in a new pair. My current J.Crew gloves just can't compete with Hestra's fine Swedish craftsmanship.

Breathtaking aerial photography from Brent Yaggi and Sarah Hicks. A Pennsylvanian and Brit, they are currently based in Denver and together they fly all over North America in a Cessna 172 looking for beauty from above. I look forward to seeing photos of their June 2012 nuptials!
